One of my fondest memories of CeBIT was the year that someone decided to save money by booking me into the cheapest hotel she could possibly find ....which in theory all sounded fine.....but when I arrived in Hamburg (note not even Hannover) in the dark the night before to find I was staying in the Redlight district of Hamburg....I was not best pleased...My 'hotel' was accessed via a dark dodgy alleyway and then once 'settled in' for the night I didn't get much sleep as the noises from the next room went on most of the night and were very full on...needless to say I moved the next morning.
Nor did it get much better....the train journey from Hamburg to Hannover is well over two hours...and once at the show (which is of course very interesting and made it all worthwhile), I did so much walking across the huge site (I hadn't learnt at that time to focus on key halls), that I had to invest in some trainers....which looked very odd with business suit and briefcase but I didn't care by that stage...of course the huge beers greatly eased the sore feet (so I can definitely recommend that as a remedy!)
and then the next year....well that's another story..........

Ah no memories from me as Cebit is a pleasure I have never enjoyed. However I have heard other horror stories of US execs taking desperate measures to stay anywhere close to the fair. One poor exec - a 6ft tool Texan, I recall - had to lodge in a local good burghers haus and stay in their kids room, sleeping in cot designed like a bi-plane. Note: the kid slept elsewhere.
Still waiting to hear about what happened in the next year
